How much is that doggie in the window?

Patti Page, artiestennaam van Clara Ann Fowler (1927–2013), was een Amerikaanse zangeres. Ze had grote hits met liedjes als "Tennessee Waltz" en "(How Much Is That) Doggie in the Window". In commercieel opzicht was ze de succesvolste zangeres van de jaren vijftig: ze verkocht meer dan honderd miljoen platen en heeft 50 albums op haar naam.

Patti Page overleed op 1 januari 2013 in een rusthuis te Encinitas in Californië.

Haar jeugd was er een van armoede. Ze groeide op in een groot gezin in Claremore, Oklahoma; ze had zeven zussen en drie broers. Haar vader, Benjamin Fowler, werkte aan de MKT-spoorweg, de lijn door Missouri, Kansas en Texas. Haar moeder, Margareth, was katoenplukker, net als haar oudere zusters. Er was geen geld voor elektriciteit, dus ze kon ’s avonds niet lezen, herinnerde ze zich later. Ze leefde in allerlei kleine dorpjes en stadjes in Oklahoma. Ze bezocht de Daniel Webster High School in Tulsa, waar ze in 1945 haar diploma haalde.

In diezelfde stad Tulsa begon ze als achttienjarige bij een plaatselijk radiostation te zingen. Ze verving de zangeres in het programma ‘Meet Patti Page Show’, dat door Page Milk Company werd gesponsord, en nam van haar de artiestennaam Patti Page over.

Ze werd opgenomen in de band van saxofonist Jack Rael, die later haar manager werd. Vervolgens zong ze bij de Jimmy Joy Band, die in 1947 in Chicago belandde. Ze at daar op een gegeven moment mee met een groep musici onder leiding van Benny Goodman. Via hem verkreeg ze een platencontract met Mercury Records.

"(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window?" is a popular novelty song published as having been written by Bob Merrill in 1952 and very loosely based on the folk tune, Carnival of Venice.

The original Page recording included the sounds of dogs barking, credited on the label as "Barks by Joe and Mac" (her arranger and violinist). The recording also features Page's signature multi-part tight harmonies, all sung by Page. Throughout the years, she recorded several other versions as well.

On April 4, 1953, singer Patti Page's rendition of "The Doggie in the Window" went to No. 1 in the US Billboard magazine chart, staying at that top spot for eight weeks. The song was wildly popular across a wide demographic. The song had school children "yipping"; Mercury Records was besieged with requests for free puppies; and the American Kennel Club's annual registrations spiked up by eight percent. In all, Page's record sold over 2 million copies.

The phrase "How much is that doggie in the window?" seemed innocent enough in 1953, but in modern times it has become synonymous with the trade in puppies from pet shops, often originating in puppy mills.

In 2009, Patti Page recorded a version of the song with a new title ("Do You See That Doggie in the Shelter") together with new lyrics, with the hopes of emphasizing the adoption of homeless animals from animal shelters. The rights to that song was given exclusively to the Humane Society of the United States.

On the occasion of Page's death, the Humane Society stated on their website, "We remember her fondly for her compassion for animals."
